This posting is motivated to help people get their questions answered as quickly as possible and with the best possible outcome.
When you post a question about Vyatta in these forums, please make sure you tell us:
-
* The version of Vyatta that you are using. There is a big difference between VC1-3 and VC4. The system changed substantially, particularly the routing subsystem. There are other huge behavioral changes. Don't assume we know what you're using. We often get questions from people still using VC2.
* What you config looks like. You don't have to send the whole configuration file, but if you're trying to debug something in firewall or NAT or whatever, send that portion of the config so people can look at it. If you can reduce it down to the smallest possible config that still has the problem you're trying to debug so we don't have to wade through reams of spurious config.
* The error message. Posting something like "I get an error when I try to commit my config. Help me!" isn't useful to anybody. Please tell us exactly what the error or aberrant behavior is.
* Provide any other information that might be relevant. It's a judgment call here. If you're asking about hardware, tell us what hardware you are using. If you're asking about installation issues, tell us what type of system and hard drive you're trying to install to. Etc.
People may ask you for other information to help get to the root of your issue, but it saves a tremendous amount of time if you provide at least those things right up front. Without those items, it's hard for anybody to even take a stab at what the issue might be.

Two further suggestions:
1) Search the archive to see if your question has already been answered. http://www.vyatta.org/forum/search.php
2) Try to use a subject that describes the issue/question rather than a generic subject like "vyatta question". When I browse the forum I'm more likely to click on a topic if the subject is something I know about or want to know more about.
Another suggestion:
Be nice to those people trying to read your configurations. Please use the [code] tag when you're pasting in a portion of your configuration. If you don't use that tag, the system will left-justify all your text, losing all the indentation and making it difficult to read. When you use [code], all the indentation is preserved and it's far easier on the eyes. Use the Preview button to check your work before posting.
Another suggestion: add a network diagram. Useful link on adding a diagram to a forum post: [url]http://www.vyatta.org/node/#comment-]
Can I also add...
Use please and thank-you, manners cost nothing and encourage others to help you
